With its roots in the European tradition, the Boehm-style flute industry in North America has been inspired and grown from the admiration of the artfully made flutes from France, particularly the flutes of Louis Lot. Other significant influences and contributions from German and English makers have also supported the growth of Boehm-style flute making in the United States and Canada. The former 20th century truly reflects the sincere commitment and growth of an industry that has persevered to create instruments that bring more harmony and music to the world. The American flute industry’s innovative approach over several decades has created flutes that perform with more facility, expression, and precision in every aspect. The variety of colors and styles between brands further exemplifies the creativity and skill existing in a part of the world that has promoted opportunity and personal expression; creating a standard that has been imitated and inspiring
to the growth of other flute industries around the world.

It is a widely known fact that flutes have existed for thousands of years in many styles and in many cultures. Today, flutists are so fortunate to have many of these styles of flute making simultaneously being created. From Baroque styles, Boehm style, Native American, and other ethnic folk flutes, the versatility reflects the numerous opportunities available to flutists for musical expression. Flutists are encouraged to educate themselves as players about the various kinds of flutes and the artists who make these flutes.
