SEASONAL UPDATE from LANDELL FLUTES
SEPTEMBER 2005– It’s been a busy summer meeting with
many flutists for the first time. Briefly, I traveled to Pittsburgh,
PA for the Jeanne Baxtresser masterclass, then to Orford, Quebec
for the Robert Langevin masterclass, and then to San Diego for the
NFA Flute Convention. I also currently am in the process of promoting
the new flute I’ve made with the patented sterling silver
alloy known as Argentium. Part of the promotional efforts included
the chance to hear Mr. Langevin play that flute in the NY Philharmonic
concert this past July – especially the part from Bizet’s
l”Arlesienne. It was fabulous!

During the NFA Convention I exhibited the Argentium flute and I
also presented a Showcase where I spoke about my “Firsts in
Flute Making”, discussing many of the innovations that I have
brought to flute making over the years. In addition to working at
the exhibits I had the opportunity to play Ravel’s Piece en
forme de habanera with the harpist of the San Diego Symphony on
the recital presenting various flute industry members – I
am happy to say that the reception was enthusiastic.
My life is continues to be centered upon the musical and technical
advancement of the flute. Landell Flutes is currently representing
the flute industry to an international consortium of metallurgists
and industry professionals who are interested in promoting the use
of this metal to the world. Within the coming months, the breaking
wave of publicity about Argentium will reach the United States markets
and flutists will gradually become aware of the material. Briefly,
Argentium is a highly tarnish resistant silver, having an increased
resistance to dents, scratches, and abrasions. It also has particular
properties that are favorable to the enhancement of the acoustics
of the flute and it is also environmentally friendlier due to its
reduced use of harsh chemicals necessary to work with the material.
I look forward to continuing the necessary work towards my goal
to fulfill and provide flutes of customized quality and performance.
